Jean Smart was great playing Southren

I grew up in South Carolina and Georgia in the 70s and 80s. I believed that Jean Smart was from somewhere else in the south when designing women was on.

I was surprised to learn that she was from the Pacific Northwest.

Charlene was great. Playing Southren.

Ok OP I know you’re dying for someone to ask.

Southren?

by Anonymousreply 1May 3, 2024 1:49 AM

I’m from the South and I really did buy it.

by Anonymousreply 2May 3, 2024 1:51 AM

But could she play Ann Southren?

by Anonymousreply 3May 3, 2024 1:51 AM

Saurthron?

She from North?

by Anonymousreply 5May 3, 2024 1:54 AM

R1, if you grew up in the deep south back in the day, you heard people from the south declaring that they were “southren” and how much they hated people who were “northren”.

And we would have all sworn back in the day that Jean Smart was “southren”.

And we would have been so lucky if she was

by Anonymousreply 6May 3, 2024 1:55 AM

[quote]She from North?

Yes.

Jean is Northren.

by Anonymousreply 7May 3, 2024 1:55 AM

Georgia Southren?

She's from Seattle, and can pretty much do anything (let us not forget her run on 24), and I too thought she was from the south, but I'm from Chicago and don't think I have an accent, so maybe not the best judge..

by Anonymousreply 12May 3, 2024 2:35 AM

She has kind eyes. The most attractive and talented of the Designing Women cast.

by Anonymousreply 13May 3, 2024 2:36 AM

Jean Smart is just one fine actress.

by Anonymousreply 14May 3, 2024 2:37 AM

Charlene was from Poplar Bluff, MO. I don't think that's considered the South. Although it is pretty close to Tennessee and Arkansas.

by Anonymousreply 15May 3, 2024 2:42 AM

Amazing actress. She tries hard in everything she does.

by Anonymousreply 16May 3, 2024 2:49 AM

The episode with the woman whose husband was abusing her was one of the most disturbing and sad things I've ever seen on television.

by Anonymousreply 17May 3, 2024 3:28 AM

I'm so happy for her that she has one of the greatest roles of her career at her age now. She deserves every award for playing Deborah Vance.

by Anonymousreply 18May 3, 2024 3:36 AM

She went to prep school in Seattle with the Crane brothers—I thought y’all knew that.

by Anonymousreply 19May 3, 2024 4:12 AM

PUT YOUR BROTHER ON THE PHONE!

by Anonymousreply 20May 3, 2024 4:14 AM

Her success is so wonderfully unusual and so welcome.

Pure talent. Such a badass.

“Hacks” is the funniest, smartest show at the moment.

by Anonymousreply 21May 3, 2024 4:20 AM

Sauron?

by Anonymousreply 22May 3, 2024 4:43 AM

R22, are you also R4?

by Anonymousreply 23May 3, 2024 4:46 AM

I thought this too op!

Of course kid me also thought she was the mom on Lassie for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 24May 3, 2024 4:58 AM

I taught her everything she knows.

by Anonymousreply 25May 3, 2024 6:27 AM

I'm going to have some Southren Biscuits and Graxy now.

by Anonymousreply 26May 3, 2024 6:34 AM

I listened to a Delta Burke interview the other day and she is the SAME. Still a self absorbed cunt.

Is it like breatheren?

by Anonymousreply 27May 3, 2024 7:02 AM

Southron or southren is a Scots and Northumbrian English term referring to the people of Southern England. Many Ulster Scots migrated to the Southern USA, particularly in Appalachia, and brought with them their colorful vernacular, which influenced the regional dialects of the South,

I wished she and Delta Burke never left DW. The last two seasons sucked.

by Anonymousreply 29May 3, 2024 7:13 AM

She was on an episode of “The Facts of Life” in Season 5 and she looks like a giant compared to the show’s cast. Smart is 5’9”.

by Anonymousreply 30May 3, 2024 8:12 AM

It's too bad she lost her husband and wasn't able to share this late-career success with him.

by Anonymousreply 31May 3, 2024 6:09 PM

R31, Hmm... Sometimes a life partner stifles one's creativity.

by Anonymousreply 32May 3, 2024 6:16 PM

That Ann Blythe monologue was so great.

by Anonymousreply 33May 3, 2024 6:24 PM

Jean Smart is so gifted, I'm glad that she's getting her due. With that said, she should have had more success at the level of feature films. She was terrific in an indie from years ago called Guinevere with Stephen Rea and Sarah Polley, unfortunately the rest of the movie blew which I think screwed her awards chances.

by Anonymousreply 34May 3, 2024 6:56 PM

Part of my family is from Poplar Bluff, MO, and I can verify Jean Smart absolutely nailed the accent. As Charlene she sounded just like my aunt who still lives there.

I'd also say that part of Missouri still counts as Southern. St. Louis doesn't, and Springfield probably doesn't, but within an hour of the Arkansas border the main difference is that the highways are better maintained.

by Anonymousreply 35May 3, 2024 7:23 PM

It was a slave state, after all.

by Anonymousreply 36May 3, 2024 7:26 PM

Did Jean and Delta Burke get along on the set of Designing Women?

Delta's career really flatlined after DW, while Jean's has slowly skyrocketed. It's scary how half the cast is dead, though.

by Anonymousreply 37May 3, 2024 7:36 PM

Scary? It started airing almost 40 years ago and its principal cast ranged from mature adults to middle-aged at the time.

by Anonymousreply 38May 3, 2024 7:44 PM

I just googled “Designing Women outtakes” and nothing came up… just “best of” clips, so apologies in advance if this is a stupid question.

But, watching Charlene go off about Ann Blyth, I would love to see how the cast cracked up watching that ridiculous stream of consciousness make its way out of the Lake of the Ozarks.

by Anonymousreply 39May 3, 2024 9:37 PM

I am another Southerner who thought for sure she was from here. Kudos to Ms. Smart!

by Anonymousreply 40May 3, 2024 9:43 PM

Her new role sucks

by Anonymousreply 41May 3, 2024 9:56 PM

Best in Homeward Bound.
